There is no doubt that travel is thrilling. There are so many great places that you can visit. New cultures, foods and people can be exhilarating. There are many local places to explore.
When traveling abroad, be on the lookout for criminals who may be posing as law or government officials. Don’t give anyone your original passport; you will probably never see it again. If they want to take you in, make sure you walk with them. Do not get into a vehicle with strangers at home or abroad.
Keep a record of all critical information when you travel out of the country. You should have your embassy’s phone number, address and website if available, for any country you travel to. If you get into any trouble while abroad, this is the first place you need to contact. This will be handy should you have difficulties.
When you check into a hotel, see if the alarm is set. Whether by simple accident or obnoxious prank, many a traveler has been awakened early in the morning or worse, in the middle of the night, by the alarm clock at their bedside. Set the alarm off so that you can sleep peacefully.
Carry a doorstop with you to give your hotel stay a little bit of extra security. You may not have access to the type of security that you think is acceptable. If the door doesn’t have a chain or deadbolt aside from its main lock, try placing one wedged door stop under your door before bed.
Melt a bucket of ice if you want to have fresh water for morning coffee. Drinking local water while traveling could have uncomfortable results. You should choose to use your hotel’s ice container to melt the ice as you sleep. The next morning, you can brew your coffee with this filtered water.
Once you’ve chosen your destination, take the time to get to know more about where you’re going. Choose a good map of the area, and pore over the museums, sightseeing destinations and the general region. The more you know about the environment, the easier it will be to get around when you are there.
Rush Hour
Don’t drive during rush hour. If that is absolutely unavoidable, use rush hour time to take a break. You can get a bite to eat or stretch your legs.
Auto rental companies usually require renters to be at least 25 years old, although some rent to drivers as young as 18. You may also need to bring a credit card with you. Certain locations don’t let senior citizens rent cars. Make certain to ask about age limits when making rental reservations.
If you are traveling to a small airport, do some research on which carriers use it. Some of them will offer charter flights that you can’t see when searching for deals, and they might be able to get you a good price.
